The Pre-Prep set out to raise funds for Addendrooke’s Charitable Trust who are currently fund raising for a new neonatal mobile incubator. The incubator will be used by the Eastern Region’s Acute Neonatal Transfer Service (Ants) based at Addenbrooke’s and Rosie Hospitals. There are currently three incubator units in our region and a fourth is urgently needed. Pupils from Kindergarten to PP2 held a Sponsored Silence and ran their own Patisserie for parents and other pupils. Mrs Cheason reported to Pre-Prep parents, "On behalf of the Pre-Prep staff, I would like to thank you for your most generous response to our Sponsored Silence and Patisserie. The final total raised is a staggering £1,054.05! We are simply overwhelmed by your generosity.Once again, a heartfelt thank you from us all for your wonderful support." |

On Friday 23rd April 14 boys from Forms VI, VII and VIII set off for a long weekend of cricket. Before the start of the 2010 Tour they had the opportunity to participate in two days of pre-season training with a professional coach, Andy Northcote, and an additional session on the Wednesday prior to the tour. Our first appointment was at St John’s Beaumont, where we were met by Mr Simon Head, the Headmaster Designate of Moreton Hall. Here we practised in their indoor school and then had a practice six-a-side match in preparation for the tournament on Saturday. After this a number of the boys had a go on the climbing wall. In the Dunhurst six-a-side competition we put all our training into practice only narrowly losing one of our pool matches and comprehensively beating the other teams. Going through to the play offs we lost to the eventual winners and in the third place play off beat St Edmund’s with four balls to spare. That evening, in high spirits, we had the tour dinner. The following day we played Liphook Youth XI in an enjoyable friendly. The boys have all benefited enormously from the camaraderie gained from living and playing together and will have fond memories for years to come. |

Past pupils and friends of the School will be sad to hear of the untimely death of Sue Cox, who taught Transition for several years, until she moved to Sevenoaks in 2001. Mrs Cox's last Transition class are sixteen and seventeen years old now, but we are certain that they will remember her fondly. |

Pupils and adults enjoyed six glorious days skiing in Pila, Italy, over the Easter holidays. All made excellent progress, none more so than those who had never skied before. By the end of the week they were all going up the mountain and skiing safely and stylishly down, and even managing to do some jumps. Those who had skied before were able to take advantage of what the mountain had to offer, and were challenged by their instructors to progress to new heights , becoming faster and more confident skiers. In the evenings, everyone was entertained with the après-ski events which included bowling, swimming, pizza and visiting an ice-cream parlour to try traditional Italian ice-cream. |

The governors of Moreton Hall have much pleasure in announcing the appointment of Simon Head to succeed Benedict Dunhill as Headmaster of Moreton Hall from September 2010. The post attracted a strong field, from which a short-list of candidates was drawn up, each of whom could comfortably have been appointed. The interview process involved the full governing body who examined the suitability of the candidates carefully. By the end of the process it had become clear that Simon and his wife Sarah were the strongest of the candidates, and in the event they were the unanimous choice of the governing body. Simon Head was educated at Stonyhurst before taking his degree in Classics at Robinson College, Cambridge. After a short service commission with the Royal Green Jackets he completed a PGCE (QTS) at Cambridge. He took up his first teaching post at Dulwich College Preparatory School teaching English, Latin and Classical Studies. Fully involved on the residential side he also coached rugby, football and cricket.
|
Simon’s keenness to travel and extend his teaching experience took him on a one-year contract to Pembroke House School in Kenya where he was responsible for the running of the boarding house. Here he taught Maths and Geography while coaching all major sports. Since 2005 he has been Housemaster, and from 2007 Deputy Headmaster, at St. John’s Beaumont in Windsor. At St. John’s he continues to coach senior rugby and rowing teams while teaching scholarship English and Latin. Currently on maternity leave with their first child Sam (5 months), his wife, Sarah, is a Year 3 teacher and a member of the pastoral team. Sarah, who is half French, has lived and worked in boarding schools for many years and together with Simon brings considerable pastoral experience to the role. The governing body is extremely confident that Moreton Hall will continue to be led enthusiastically and with confidence at this important time in its history and that Simon and Sarah will quickly win the respect and affection of pupils, parents and staff. |

Final performances of the Nativity story took place this week and the Pre-Prep distinguished themselves with their performances. The diction and projection were superb and not one word of the story was lost. Parents might, however, have missed some of the story as they reached for their hankies – there was barely a dry eye in the house during the solo verses of Little Donkey and Away in a Manger! The emotions were running high when Herod appeared too, though it did seem that the kings might start laughing at one point! The angels were truly beatific and it can only be a great joy, over Christmas, to have one of these little creatures living in one’s house. The final dance and songs brought the sheer joy of production to life, with energy and innocence, at this time of Christian celebration. Congratulations to all of the Pre-Prep staff and pupils for a very memorable reminder of the Christmas message. BHD |

Four pupils from Moreton Hall Prep School have been selected to play for Suffolk County Cricket U10 and U 11s for the next season while county coaching takes place throughout the winter. Headmaster Ben Dunhill said that the success was linked to the improved sporting facilities at the school citing the new indoor nets in this instance. “For a school of our size it is wonderful to have four players in the full county set up with other boys already playing with West Suffolk”. |

While Mrs Young was welcoming visitors to the fine Adam rooms of the main house Mr Dunhill and family took the boarders for a day in Cambridge. After a noodle feast in Wagamama and some thrifty shopping we headed for the Cam and a spot of punting. Our guide, William had been at university with Miss Hardman and the pupils slid gently along the celebrated waterway admiring the beautiful architecture. Mr Dunhill, in the self-punted version, caused rather more ripples but only lost his punting stick once! (He says that is quite good). |

As part of the first week of the new academic year we have once again run our ‘Living Together Day’. Living Together Day has several goals: 1) to reinforce the school’s values 2) to give pupils the opportunity to consider how they work best together as groups 3) to help pupils understand their responsibilities as individuals within groups and the school community as a whole 4) to help the integration of new pupils The day included a morning of command tasks throughout the school grounds, followed by a camp-building exercise to where groups returned after lunch to barbecue fruit and marshmallow kebabs. The afternoon continued with a set of role play situations designed to illustrate the school’s values at work in everyday school situations. I have explained carefully to new overseas pupils that it won’t be like this every day at Moreton Hall! BHD |
